This time around, we finish our discussion of what many will, in time, regard as the first true Rush album, Fly By Night. Side 2 contains some classic Rush tunes, and the album as a whole signals the trajectory of the band's career for decades to come. The guys are flying high on this one, so let's go along for the ride!

I consider Fly By Night their second debut album because of Neil's debut. FBN has so much musical and Lyrical range compared to their first album. It's like a reboot to show, "hey, look what we can do." My dad is an old school Tolkien fan who's taste in music doesn't go past classical music but when I played Rivendell, it thrilled him and is the *only* Rush song he likes. I used to have bootlegs from their early tours and during In The End between the acoustic intro and the rest of the song, Geddy would count out loud for the beat of the song, "1, 2 buckle my shoe" and when he said buckle my shoe the sound guy would make his voice go up like he was Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks!

Rivendell would be a nice song on Caress of steel. And yes, I’m a Tolkien fan ;)
