Welcome back to Something for Nothing: A RUSH Fancast! This week we finish off Caress of Steel with a looong take on the album-side song The Fountain of Lamneth. Other topics include The Odyssey, perfume, and how Gerry's brain misfired when he said his favorite RUSH font is the one from AFTK but then describes the one from Hemispheres! Please don't yell at me! I sometimes call my kids by the dogs' names!

If Narpets is an anagram, why can't Lamneth? It could be a play on words to be really The Fountain Of Lament. Even though I only read Anthem by Ayn Rand, doesn't she have a book titled The Fountainhead? To put this song into context, I think it helps to know Neil's backstory before joining Rush. He wanted to become successful as a musician in the London music scene. He lived there for a few years in hopes to reach this dream but became disillusioned and went home discouraged. He joined his dad's farm equipment store and was approached to join Rush while having the job title of parts manager. When writing Lamneth I wonder if this recent experience inspired him to write about himself, his aspirations, meeting a woman (Panacea), partying (Bacchus Plateau) and seeing the light that his dream isn't what it's cracked up to be (The Fountain). Alex has confessed he nearly stole the playing style of Steve Hackett from Genesis for the No One At The Bridge solo. I kinda agree. Never knew the artwork was supposed to be gray. This is the closest I've heard anyone make any reference to the title of the album...why in the world would they call this album Caress Of Steel? I've wondered about this for more than 30 years...Wait, maybe it's an anagram! Nah

Thank you, dlm85! You are correct. I don't have my vinyl copy of FBN anymore, but I'll take your word on it. I hope you keep enjoying the podcast! Next episode we'll be covering the incomparable 2112!

Love your podcast. Pretty sure city names are where the song was written. Fly By Night also has city names listed with lyrics. Saginaw is in Michigan.
